As an HCA, your role in caring for clients is a crucial part of the healthcare system. Understanding and using medical terminology is essential for Health Care Aides (HCAs) because it promotes client safety, effective communication and quality client care.
HCAs encounter medical terms every day, whether they are reading client care plans or communicating with other healthcare team members, clients and families. Knowing how to use medical terms correctly also helps prevent errors and maintain accurate documentation.
HCAs will develop their ability to recognize common medical terms and the difference between prefixes, combining forms, root words, and suffixes. HCAs will also explore common anatomy terms and common disease terminology used to describe the human body and its systems.

By the end of this course, HCAs will be able to:
- Break down medical terms into prefixes, combining forms, and suffixes to understand how medical vocabulary is constructed.
