Overview

This self-paced module aims to help Health Care Aides (HCAs) strengthen their professional communication skills and should take approximately 3 hours to complete. HCAs will review the basics of effective communication, practice handling difficult conversations, and be introduced to conflict management strategies.

Throughout the module, HCAs are encouraged to reflect on their own communication style and how it affects interactions with clients, families, and coworkers. By completing this learning, HCAs will build the skills needed to communicate professionally, respectfully, and effectively, supporting both client safety and a positive healthcare environment.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, HCAs will:

  • Identify the core elements of professional communication.
  • Apply effective communication techniques during difficult conversations with clients, family members, and the healthcare team to maintain professionalism, empathy, and client-centred care.
  • Recognize and use appropriate conflict management and de-escalation strategies to promote safety, collaboration, and positive relationships within the healthcare team.
  • Explore the importance of cultural awareness while communicating with clients, family members, and the healthcare team.
