Understanding HCA Professional Regulation
Overview
The Understanding HCA Professional Regulation Module is required for all new HCA registrants upon initial application and for HCAs who want to enhance their understanding of professional regulation. By completing this module, HCAs will gain an understanding of how the HCA profession is regulated and its implications for their practice.
Health Care Aides (HCAs) are responsible for their work and behaviour on the job. This module explains the basic rules and laws that HCAs in Alberta must follow. HCAs in Alberta must be registered with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). This module helps HCAs understand what it means to be a regulated health professional and why registration with CLHA is important for safe patient care.
This self-paced module may take approximately 2-3 hours to complete and explains how the HCA profession is regulated in Alberta and how this affects the HCA’s professional responsibilities. It introduces the main laws, standards, and responsibilities that guide HCA practice. It also covers the importance of ongoing learning, professional behaviour, and client safety.
HCAs are provided with resources to help them recognize and avoid professional misconduct. In addition, the module provides HCAs with resources to help them better understand restricted activities within the HCA scope.
Learning Objectives
After completing this module, HCAs will:
- explain the purpose of professional regulation, including its implications on HCA professional practice
- demonstrate an understanding of legislation that guides and governs the Health Care Aide profession
- demonstrate an understanding of the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics that guide Health Care Aide practice in Alberta
- identify the purpose, role, and function of CLHA in regulating the Health Care Aide profession in Alberta
- identify the purpose of protected titles, mandatory registration, and practice requirements
- demonstrate an understanding of the HCA role, responsibilities and expectations, including professional conduct and continuing competence
