Determining HCA Scope of Practice Guideline
What’s in the document?
Regulated health professionals follow common standards for their competence and conduct. In our series, “What’s in the Document?” we will share information on key requirements for Health Care Aides (HCAs) in Alberta as established in documents from the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).
What Is the Determining HCA Scope of Practice Guideline?
CLHA practice guidelines give HCAs evidence-based guidance to make safe and appropriate decisions in their practice.
The Determining HCA Scope of Practice guideline helps HCAs determine whether a task falls within their scope of practice. HCA scope of practice may differ in each setting, and this guideline is designed to support HCAs in working to their optimal scope of practice in all settings.
The Determining HCA Scope of Practice guideline describes the three areas an HCA needs to consider to determine their scope of practice as well as factors to think about when making decisions about scope of practice.
- Regulatory Scope of Practice: Laws and regulations define what tasks HCAs are authorized to do. More guidance is provided through standards of practice, code of ethics, and other resources.
- Employer Scope of Practice: HCA scope of practice can change depending on the practice setting. This is because employers can establish the HCA role in their setting as long as any task assigned is in regulatory scope of practice.
- Individual Scope of Practice: HCAs should only perform tasks that they have the competence to perform. Individual competence includes knowledge, skills, abilities, judgment, and experience.
- Three-Factor Framework: HCAs also need to consider the specific circumstances that they are performing a task in. This includes the HCA’s competence; the client’s needs, preferences, and risk factors; and the environment in which a task is being performed.
