August 24, 2026 | HCA Registration Renewal

Professional Liability Insurance Is Required for Renewal

In order to be registered with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA), Health Care Aides (HCAs) must have professional liability insurance that meets the minimum requirements established by CLHA Bylaws.

HCAs Must Get Professional Liability Insurance for Every Renewal

HCAs must obtain and pay for insurance separate from their renewal fees. If you do not do this, you may not be able to renew.

Instructions for Purchasing Professional Liability Insurance

What Is Professional Liability Insurance?

Professional liability insurance, also known as “malpractice insurance,” has a dual purpose: it protects the HCA, and it protects the public. Insurance pays for any damages that may result from the care that HCAs provide.

Liability Insurance in the Complaints Process

If an HCA is named in a complaint, and they have professional liability insurance, then they can use their disciplinary expense coverage for legal costs associated with the complaints process.

Options for Professional Liability Insurance

HCAs can meet the requirement for professional liability insurance in one of two ways.

Option One: Use the Direct Link

The CLHA will provide a link where you can optionally select and pay for a plan from Navacord that has been designed to meet our minimum coverage requirements. If you use this link, you will not have to upload proof of insurance.

Learn more about this plan

When you’ve gone through Navacord’s process, click the button in the renewal form to send a copy of your proof of insurance to the CLHA.

Note: There may be a delay in sending this proof. Even if there is, you can still continue with your application and submit it when you believe it’s complete. If there are any issues with your insurance or any other part of your application, the CLHA will send you a follow up email after they have reviewed your full renewal form.

Option Two: Select Your Own Provider

You will also have the option of selecting a plan with the insurance provider of your choice, providing the plan meets the CLHA’s minimum requirements. If you select your own provider, you must upload proof of insurance.

Requirements for Professional Liability Insurance

If you successfully get insurance through the link in the registration form (Option One above), your insurance will meet all of the CLHA’s requirements.

If you are getting insurance through your own provider (Option Two), you should be aware of the following requirements.

  • Insurance must be in your name: Your name must be the same as it appears on your MyCLHA account and photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.).
  • Insurance must apply specifically to HCA practice: If you are registered with another college, you must have a separate policy for that profession. However, if you are registered as an Alberta LPN, Navacord insurance can be adjusted to cover both practices.
  • Insurance must be carried for the whole year: You need insurance as long as you are registered with the CLHA.
  • Insurance must meet minimum coverage requirements: See below for more detail.

Minimum Coverage Requirements

The CLHA requires the following minimum coverage for medical malpractice liability insurance:

  • general malpractice coverage of up to $2,000,000 per claim,
  • up to $5,000,000 for all claims against a registrant in a single year, and
  • disciplinary expenses coverage up to $50,000 per occurrence per year (e.g., coverage for lawyers fees during conduct proceedings).
