Standards, Codes, and Policies

There are a number of documents that guide, define, and support the legal and professional expectations of Health Care Aide practice.

For information about the legislation and regulations that govern operations, including our Bylaws, see: Council and Governance

Standards & Code

The Standards of Practice for HCAs in Alberta and Code of Ethics for HCAs in Alberta are documents required under the Health Professions Act.

There are several standards of practice that define the legal and professional expectations of HCA practice.

The Code of Ethics articulates the values of the HCA profession and the responsibilities that HCAs uphold and promote, and to which they are accountable.

Registrant Policies

Registrant policies are clear and concise statements outlining requirements and expected behaviours of HCAs registered with the CLHA. A policy may address regulatory functions mentioned in the HPA or practice expectations.

Practice Guidelines, Interpretive Documents, and Info Sheets

These documents support HCAs in understanding professional expectations.

A Practice Guideline gives HCAs evidence-based guidance to make safe and appropriate decisions in their practice.

An Interpretive Document explains legislation that affects HCAs and outlines how to meet legal and professional requirements in practice.

An Info Sheet gives HCAs clear, concise information on key topics, processes, or expectations related to their practice.
