Health Care Aides (HCAs) on the transitional register have until February 2, 2027, to meet requirements for the general register. Transitional HCAs also must complete Registration Renewal.

What Is the Transitional Register?

HCAs on the transitional register previously applied to the Alberta HCA Directory. When regulation came into force on February 2, 2026, HCAs who had the statuses of Deemed Competent – In Progress or Substantially Equivalent – In Progress, or were in a Workplace Program, moved to the transitional register with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) while they finish meeting requirements for the general register.

Transitional HCAs are either awaiting the completion of the Competency Assessment Profile (CAP) tool or Substantial Equivalence Assessment, or they have not met the requirements of the Workplace Program.

How Do I Check If Someone Is on the Transitional Register?

If you want to check if someone is on the CLHA transitional register, follow the steps below.

1. Click here to access the CLHA Public Registry.
2. Search for an individual HCA by first and last name or registration number.
3. You may need to complete a CAPTCHA when searching.
4. Transitional HCAs will have their Registration/Status listed as Transitional – HCA.

If you are an authorized HCA employer representative, you can use, or sign up for, Employer Verification to determine if you have anyone on the transitional register. See the page linked in the instructions above for more information.

Do Transitional HCAs Need to Renew Their Registration?

Yes, HCAs on the transitional register need to renew their registration by November 30, 2026. If transitional HCAs do not renew, their registration will be suspended, and they will not be permitted to practice as an HCA. Click here for FAQs on HCA Registration Renewal.

If suspended, transitional HCAs must complete reinstatement by December 31, 2026. If they don’t, they will no longer be eligible for registration on the transitional register and may not be eligible for registration as an HCA if they reapply.

What Other Requirements Do Transitional HCAs Need to Meet to Move to the General Register?

Renewal is only one of the requirements that transitional HCAs need to meet. They will also need to meet their requirements to move to the general register. This is a separate process from registration renewal.

Transitional HCAs are either awaiting the completion of the Competency Assessment Profile (CAP) tool or Substantial Equivalence Assessment, or they have not met the requirements of the Workplace Program.

HCAs on the transitional register must continue working toward completing all outstanding requirements. These requirements must be completed, and proof of completion provided to the CLHA, on or before February 2, 2027, at 11:59 p.m.

What Happens to HCAs on the Transitional Register after February 2, 2027?

If transitional HCAs do not complete their outstanding requirements by February 2, 2027, their CLHA registration and practice permit will be cancelled. This means that they will not be able to practice as an Alberta HCA, and they may not be eligible for registration as an HCA if they reapply.

HCAs can apply for an extension of the February 2 deadline if extenuating circumstances will prevent them from meeting the deadline. The CLHA requires requests to be submitted by January 2, 2027.
