Overview
This learning module was developed based on research outlining practicing nurses’ and student nurses’ learning needs related to working with older people. In a recent study, practicing nurses indicated their top learning need related to working with older people was understanding cognitive impairment and how to manage associated responsive behaviors (Dahlke et al., 2019).
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the difference between depression, dementia and delirium.
- Identify how to assess and manage the different types of cognitive impairment (dementia, depression and delirium).
- Name the most commonly used assessments for cognitive impairment (dementia, depression, and delirium) and have a general understanding of how to use them.
- Describe the responsive behaviours that may occur as part of cognitive impairment and non-pharmacological ways to address them.
