These standards provide a clear definition of the LPN-Client relationship and the conduct that is acceptable while that relationship exists. LPNs engaging in sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, or female genital mutilation is strictly prohibited by the Health Professions Act and these standards.
The LPN is in a position of power and trust; therefore, a consensual sexual relationship with a patient is never possible. Even if the patient agrees to sexual relations with the LPN, this conduct is considered sexual abuse under the HPA.
The standards also outline when an individual is not considered a client, such as if an individual is a former client, a spouse, or a recipient of episodic care.
These standards are complimentary to the Standards of Practice for LPNs on Professional Boundaries. It is important to remember that any conduct that does not fall under Sexual Abuse, Sexual Misconduct, or FGM, may still be a professional boundary violation.
