This learning module introduces the regulatory framework that governs LPN practice and explains why regulation is essential to protecting the public. It provides a foundation for
understanding LPNs’ legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities and is a requirement for individuals entering the profession.

By the end of this module, LPNs should be able to:

1. Explain the purpose of professional regulation, including its implications on LPN professional practice.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of legislation that guides and governs the LPN profession.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the Health Professions Act, Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics, and policies that guide LPN practice in Alberta.
4. Identify the purpose, role, and function of CLHA in regulating the LPN profession in Alberta.
5. Identify the purpose of protected titles, mandatory registration, restricted activities, and practice requirements.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the LPN role, responsibilities, and expectations, including professional conduct and continuing competence.
