HCA Regulation Coming February 2, 2026
The Government of Alberta recently announced that Health Care Aide (HCA) regulation will come into force on February 2, 2026.
When HCA regulation comes into effect, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) will become one college regulating two distinct professions: Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides, changing its name to the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).
What Is Changing?
Currently, HCA scope of practice is not defined through regulation and standards the way that scope is for LPNs and other professionals. Regulation will bring more consistency to HCA scope of practice and support greater accountability.
What Isn’t Changing?
Sharing a regulatory college will not affect the different roles of LPNs and HCAs in the healthcare system. LPNs and HCAs are distinct professions. In addition, LPNs will continue to have access to the same professional development, regulatory resources, and practice advice that they currently receive from their regulatory college to assist in providing safe care.
