Licensed Practical Nurse Workforce Summary
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) statistics are included in the Annual Report for the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). This is the last report under that organization name. On February 2, 2026, the CLPNA became the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta.
LPN Statistics
There were 21,270 LPNs registered with the CLPNA as of November 30, 2025.
- There were 2,731 new members, including:
- 1,516 new graduates from Alberta post-secondary institutions,
- 490 reinstatements,
- 359 Canadian applicants, and
- 353 international applicants.
Out of all LPNs:
- The most common workplaces are hospitals (40%), long term care (25%), and community health (18%).
- 43% work full-time, 40% work part-time, and 17% work on a casual basis.
- 34.6% work in the Edmonton area and 32.8% work in the Calgary area.
- The average age of Alberta LPNs is 39.
The CLPNA received 246 complaints of unprofessional conduct.
- 156 of those complaints were received from an employer, and 85 were received from a member of the public. The CLPNA Complaints Director initiated 5 additional complaints.
- Most allegations involved concerns about clinical competencies or unprofessional conduct.
- Including files received in previous years, 309 complaints were resolved.
- 183 were resolved through consent resolution.
- 59 were in monitoring orders as of November 30, 2026.
- 27 were withdrawn.
- 25 were dismissed.
- 10 hearings were complete, representing 13 total files.
- 2 registrations were surrendered.
