Notice of a Wording Change for Registration
Providing greater clarity for registrants and applicants.
This serves as a notice that the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) has changed the name of one of the registration categories from “active” to “general.”
What’s on My Permit?
Registrants with the CLHA can view their practice permit, a proof of registration with the CLHA, in their MyCLHA.com accounts.
- In your internet browser, go to MyCLHA.com.
- Log in using your email and your password.
- On your profile, click “Download registration” on the menu. It will be on the lefthand side of your screen if you are viewing on a computer.
You will now be able to view your permit. An example of what you might see on your permit is below.
Active Practice Permit
An active practice permit means that a person can practice in Alberta following any conditions or other requirements.
Anyone who is active on the provisional, general, courtesy, or transitional register can practice in Alberta. Previously, “active” did not appear on provisional, courtesy, or transitional permits.
Anyone whose CLHA registration is cancelled or suspended cannot practice in Alberta. These permits are considered “inactive.”
Status

Being on the general register (formerly known as “active registration”) means that an LPN or HCA can practice in Alberta, following legislative, regulatory, and employer requirements, without additional supervision requirements.
The provisional register is for certain applicants who are waiting to complete their registration exam. Provisional registrants have one year to meet requirements to move to the general register.
LPNs and HCAs on the provisional register are allowed to practice under supervision while waiting to write their exam. Note that supervision may be direct, indirect, or indirect remote.
- Direct: a supervising health professional (nurse, physician, etc.) is at the point of care.
- Indirect: a supervising health professional is not at point of care, but they are onsite and available to provide direction, support, etc.
- Indirect remote: a supervising health professional is off-site, but they are available by phone or another means.
LPNs on the provisional register will move to the general register after completing the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE).
HCAs on the provisional register will move to the general register after completing the Alberta HCA Registration Examination (AHRE).
The courtesy register is a temporary (three months or fewer) register for LPNs and HCAs coming from specified provinces.
Currently, there are HCAs on a CLHA transitional register. These individuals moved from the Alberta HCA Directory while their applications were in process. These HCAs are completing requirements to move to the general register. They can practice while working to meet these requirements as long as they receive appropriate supervision. Transitional permits expire on February 2, 2027, unless an extension has been approved.
Expiry
HCAs and LPNs need to renew yearly, before their practice permits expire on November 30.
Once you have renewed, you will have permits for the 2025/6 registration year and the 2026/7 registration year until December 1.

LPN Advanced Authorizations
This appears on LPN permits only.
LPNs can apply for advanced authorization to perform certain restricted activities.

Conditions
If an asterisk (*) appears in the conditions column, click on “View Details” for a list of conditions. Conditions may be added to a person’s registration due to registration or conduct requirements. Conditions are specific to the LPN or HCA. Not everyone will have conditions on their permit.
