LPN Registration Renewal Guide

Complete the Process as Soon as Possible

Submitting your renewal early ensures that:

  • The CLHA has time to evaluate your renewal form.
  • You have time to address any issues and complete your renewal.

If you don’t complete and pay for your renewal by November 30, your registration with the CLHA will be suspended. You will not be able to practice until you complete reinstatement. Reinstatement includes additional steps and fees.

Prepare for Renewal

The following steps will help you prepare for renewal.

  1. Make sure you have your email address and password to login to MyCLHA. Staff do not have access to your password.
    •  If you forget your password, you will have to complete the password reset instructions on the login page. If you no longer have access to the email you used last year, please contact the CLHA.
  2. Gather your current practice hours and employer information from the previous year. All LPNs are required to have worked a minimum of a 1,000 hours in the previous 4-year period (2023-2026) in order to renew.
  3. Consider the learning that you did in the past year and think about the learning you want to do in the coming year.
  4. Make sure that your payment information is available.

Registration Renewal Fees

This year, LPNs will pay $350 for their registration renewal if they renew between September 8 and October 31. The fee for renewing from November 1 to November 30 is $550.

PAD Subscribers Still Need to Renew

Subscribers to the Pre-Authorized Debit Plan are still subject to the $200 registration levy if they renew after October 31.

If You Are Also Registered as an HCA

If you are registered as both an LPN and an HCA with the CLHA, you will need to complete two renewals. We ask that you complete your LPN renewal first, and then your HCA renewal.

Your LPN insurance will also cover HCA practice. You need to complete separate insurance applications for both your LPN and HCA registration. When completing your HCA application, you will be identified as a dual registrant, and your HCA premium will be $0.

If you are not planning on working as an LPN in Alberta after November, you can choose to cancel your registration. To do this:

  1. Find the heading that says “Change My Registration for 2026/2027.”
  2. Click the green button that says “Change.”
  3. Complete the form. Your registration will be cancelled as of November 30. You will not be able to practice after this date.

» Update Your Profile

The first step of Registration Renewal is to review and update your Profile. The steps for the first page are listed below.

  1. Review your demographic information and update as needed.
  2. Under the “Good Standing Declaration” heading, let us know if you are registered as a health professional anywhere other than with CLHA.
  3. Once you have verified that your profile information is correct, read the text under “Profile Update Declaration” and click the box to acknowledge.
  4. Click the “Page Two” button to continue.

As a regulated professional, you are required to provide up-to-date information to the CLHA. If you changed your name, moved your home address, or made other changes, you need to provide these to us. Renewal is a good opportunity to make sure everything is updated, so read this section carefully.

Obtain Professional Liability Insurance

LPNs must obtain insurance every year. Insurance must be obtained separate from registration renewal fees.

On page two of the My Profile section, you can select your option for obtaining the required insurance. If you are planning on purchasing insurance through Lloyd Sadd, click Yes to be taken through the Lloyd Sadd insurance process. When you are finished, a copy of your proof of insurance will be provided directly to the CLPNA.

If you have chosen an alternate insurer, please upload a copy of your documents in this section.

Employer Information

Under the Employer Information section, you can update your employment status. If you state that you are employed, you must list at least one employer. Employment and retirement information is collected for the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) to support workforce planning and other reporting.

Methods of Care

Under “Methods of Care,” tell us how you most often interact with clients in your primary practice setting. Choose the answer that fits the best.

» Continuing Competence Learning Plans

Your learning plans for 2026 and 2027 need to connect to one of the four standards in the Standards of Practice for LPNs in Canada. Each standard has multiple indicators underneath.

VIEW THE STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

You’ll need to be able to describe a connection between your learning and the standard and indicator that you selected. Note that there is not a single right answer. The standards are broad concepts, and the learning that you select may fit under more than one.

Learning Plan 2026

You will need to provide information on the continuing competence goals that you completed or will complete by the end of November. These goals may be the same as the ones you indicated at renewal last year, or they may have changed. We recommend reporting on three goals, with two goals being the minimum.

Please note that activities completed between December 1, 2025, and November 30, 2026, must count towards Learning Plan 2026.

Learning Plan 2027

In the next section, you’ll select the learning that you plan to do in the following registration year. This is an opportunity to reflect on topics that you’d like to learn more about. The Standards of Practice for LPNs in Canada cover a wide range of practice areas for LPNs, including but not limited to clinical skills, leadership, policy development, fitness to practice, and learning related to regulatory responsibilities.

Please note that activities completed between December 1, 2026, and November 30, 2027, must count towards Learning Plan 2027.

» Payment

You may be able to pay at this time. However, if your renewal form needs to be reviewed the CLHA, you will need to wait until you receive an email that tells you when you can pay.

It is always good to check your junk mail and to login periodically in case an email might have been missed.
