Registration Renewal Survey

Report from last year’s renewal

Last year, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who completed their 2026 practice permit renewal had the opportunity to provide feedback on the registration renewal process. The survey, which can be completed following renewal, supports the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) in identifying improvement areas with the renewal process.

Approximately 1,200 LPNs completed the survey. The survey was conducted while the CLHA was still called the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.

LPNs Had Positive Experiences Overall

Feedback suggests that most LPNs found last year’s renewal process straightforward, easy to navigate, and well supported by CLHA staff.

Among respondents, 82% agreed that they found the process to renew straightforward and that the online form was easy to navigate, while 92% agreed that the process to purchase liability insurance was easy. These results are an increase from the previous year, suggesting continued improvement in the renewal experience.

LPNs who contacted the CLHA with questions also reported positive experiences. Of those who reached out, 75% agreed that their questions were appropriately addressed by staff.

The CLHA Is Making Improvements

While overall LPNs reported positive experiences with last year’s renewal process, opportunities for streamlining have been identified.

Most respondents completed their renewal without technical difficulties (87%), but we are working to address the issues identified where possible.

In addition, the CLHA is addressing feedback received in last year’s survey in the following ways.

  • Ensuring necessary staffing: the CLHA is expanding available staff to ensure that we can provide timely support throughout the renewal process.
  • Updating our resources: the website, articles, and other resources related to renewal will be updated to address gaps in understanding reported in the survey.
  • Improving our processes: where possible, the CLHA is addressing process issues with the renewal form to streamline the experience for registrants.

LPNs Reported Positive Perceptions of Regulation

Overall, responses suggest that LPNs have a strong understanding of the CLHA’s regulatory role and generally view the organization as knowledgeable, responsive, and focused on public safety.

Most respondents (85%) agreed that the CLHA provides the required expertise and knowledge about LPNs. Similarly, 87% agreed that the CLHA regulates in a manner that protects and serves the public.

Communication and regulatory resources provided by the CLHA were also viewed positively. Most respondents (86%) agreed that the CLHA communicates with LPNs in a timely manner and that CLHA resources helped them to understand their practice and supported their continued learning (82% agreed).

2027 Renewal Survey Coming Soon

The CLHA will continue to invite registrants to complete a survey following their 2027 renewal. Results between years will be compared to determine further areas for improvement.
