Strategic Update 2024-2025
2025 was the final year of the CLPNA’s Strategic Plan
The Annual Report for the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) covers key activities performed under each of our three strategic pillars: strengthening service delivery, enhancing collaboration and confidence, and evolving professional competence.
Note that the Strategic Update in this year’s Annual Report covers December 1, 2024, to November 30, 2025. On February 2, 2026, Health Care Aide regulation came into effect, and the CLPNA changed its name to the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta.
Strengthening Service Delivery
- Released videos for public awareness to support improved understanding of the importance of health profession regulation.
- Developed a handbook for international applicants to provide detailed instructions to support a smoother application process.
- Committed to Nursys, a database to provide the CLPNA with faster access to registration information for participating regulatory bodies.
- Implemented a new applicant pathway, Interjurisdictional Nursing Licensure, a fast, affordable option for LPNs who are currently registered in another Canadian jurisdiction.
Enhancing Collaboration and Confidence
- Launched a health simulation pilot project to support two areas: remedial education for conduct concerns and alternatives for meeting registration requirements.
- Partnered with a researcher to analyze LPN data related to fitness to practice, which influences the quality of care the public receives.
- Supported the divestment of the Frederickson- McGregor Education Foundation to maintain LPN access to the original funds while ensuring the CLPNA is meeting its mandate of public protection.
Evolving Professional Competence
- Launched a new webinar, Professional Responsibility and Accountability, covering key patient safety topics such as professional boundaries and abandonment of care.
- Revised the Standards of Practice on Restricted Activities, Advanced Practice, and Supervision to optimize current LPN education, enhance clarity around supervision, and align language more closely with regulation.
- Released new practice guidance to support LPNs in their decision-making in practicing safely and ethically in areas of artificial intelligence and working multiple regulated and unregulated roles.
