Care of the Older Adult Modules:
Responsive Behaviours

Throughout 2025, the CLPNA will release modules on the care of older adults. These modules provide an evidence-informed lens to support critical thinking, professional judgement, and integrate knowledge of trends and issues related to care of the older adult.

New module: Responsive Behaviours
Coming next: Ageism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Responsive behaviours are the actions, words, or gestures that persons with dementia exhibit as a way of responding to something negative, frustrating, or confusing in their current social or physical environment. This module will support LPNs in understanding and addressing responsive behaviours in a variety of settings.

What Will LPNs Learn in this Module?

This learning module was developed based on research outlining practicing nurses’ and student nurses’ learning needs related to working with older people.

LPNs who complete this module can expect to learn the following.

  • Develop an intermediate level understanding of what responsive behaviours are and what may cause them.
  • Explore strategies to manage responsive behaviours in both long-term care and acute care settings.
  • Develop an understanding of obstacles that may arise when managing responsive behaviours while working in acute settings and exploring strategies on how to overcome these challenges.
