Care of the Older Adult Modules:
Continence and Mobility
The College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) is releasing a series of modules on the care of older adults. These modules provide an evidence-informed lens to support critical thinking, professional judgement, and the integration of trends and issues related to the care of the older adult.
New module: Continence and Mobility
Coming up next: Understanding and Communicating with Older People
This module will provide Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with the background needed to support the proper assessment of continence needs and the mobilization of older people.
What Will LPNs Learn in This Module?
This learning module was developed based on research outlining practicing nurses’ and student nurses’ learning needs related to working with older people.
LPNs who complete this module can expect to learn the following.
- Understand what is known about continence care.
- Understand evidence-based approaches to preventing incontinence.
- Understand evidence-based approaches to maintaining continence.
- Understand the connection between continence and mobility.
- Assess their knowledge of continence and mobility of older persons.
- Review resources related to continence and mobility of older persons.
How To Access Modules
All modules are accessible through a MyCLHA account. Only specific groups, including active and provisional LPNs, certain applicants, and student members, have access.
- Go to the CLHA Website
- Log in to your myCLHA account using your CLHA username (email) and password.
- Once logged in, select the “Learning Modules” link near the bottom of the menu on the left-hand side.
- Select the selfstudy.clha.com link to enter the CLHA Learning Management System (LMS).
- From the home page of the LMS, select the LPN Courses link to view the LPN learning modules.
- Scroll down to view all modules.
- Select the image/link for the module you are interested in taking.
- Select “Enroll me” to open the module.

More Tips & Tricks
- Your “My Courses” page shows all modules you are currently enrolled in.
- When you complete a module, remember to go to the “Certificate” section to view and download your certificate.
- Downloaded certificates are listed under “Completed Courses” on your “Dashboard” page.
