Care of the Older Adult Modules:
Understanding and Communicating with Older People
The College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA) has released a series of modules on the care of older adults. These modules provide an evidence-informed lens to support critical thinking, professional judgement, and the integration of trends and issues related to the care of the older adult.
A number of factors can impact how Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and other professionals understand and communicate with older adults. This module will support LPNs in understanding these factors and in learning how to effectively communicate with older clients.
What Will LPNs Learn in This Module?
This learning module was developed based on research outlining practicing nurses’ and student nurses’ learning needs related to working with older people.
LPNs who complete this module can expect to learn the following.
- Develop an understanding of the prevalence of ageism.
- Explore the diversity of older people.
- Explore the communication challenges associated with ageing.
- Develop strategies to effectively communicate with older people.
